Assessor, clerk hopefuls in run-offs

The top two candidates in a pair of parish-wide races will square off in the Nov. 19 general election.

None of the seven candidates for Ouachita Parish Clerk of Court received the required 50 percent of the vote in the Oct. 22 primary to avoid a run-off. Also, the top two vote-getters in a field of three candidates for Ouachita Parish Tax Assessor advanced to the November general election.

Paul Hargrove must close a seven-point gap to overtake Stephanie Smith in the race to replace retiring Ouachita Parish Tax Assessor Rich Bailey.

Hargrove received 35 percent of the 30,928 votes cast in the Tax Assessor's race. Smith pulled 12,975 votes to place first, or 42 percent of the vote. Joanna Massey finished third with 23 percent of the vote.
