Coaches more like fathers

Jim Coats. Bill Ruple. Charlie Brown. "Chick" Childress. Van Leigh. George Luffey. and Harry Petty. These were the men who bridged the gap after my father died. Yes, they were my coaches, but they were also my surrogate fathers.

My father died on March 20, 1958, nine days before my 14th birthday. These coaches all played an important part as I was growing up. After my father died, all of them played vital roles in the responsibilities toward rearing a young boy. I certainly needed each of them as I adjusted to life without a father. I guess each of them were proxy fathers who aided me as I fine-tuned my life's daily schedule.

Coach Jim Coats probably knew my psychological make-up better than anyone. I was going through some mental growing pains. Coach Coats could have given up on me, but he knew that deep down there was a hurting young man who was still adjusting to his father's death, even though it had been six years since the sudden death of my father. I still did not know where I was going, or how I would get there. It was tough on this teenager.
