OCOG dickers over diversity

A lack of racial diversity will mean an area human services authority will have to wait to get to work on fulfilling its mandate to streamline services to underprivileged individuals in six northeastern Louisiana parishes.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority represents six parishes, including Ouachita Parish. It was created by state law in 2006 and will, once up and running, help ensure individuals receive the best possible support from state aid groups ranging from food stamps to Medicaid.

However, for that to happen, the authority must first establish a board of directors, according to Russell Semon, who is spearheading the initiative on behalf of the state.

Semon told Ouachita Council of Governments Monday that a 17-member board was formed in 2006, but very little was done and the board eventually "fell away."
