Work could begin as soon as next month to repair the roofs of several structures at Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo.

Zoo director Joe Clausen said the work is part of a capital improvement project that includes repairs to a railroad bridge, improving foundations under some buildings and demolishing others.

"We did the train bridge first, because that was the number one priority," said Clausen. "Once the train was finished, this was the second priority on the list."

Clausen estimates it will cost around $125,000 to replace the aging and damaged roofs of the giraffe barn, reptile house and kitchen complex.
