State elections officials project voter turnout will be lighter than usual in a sweeping statewide primary election to be held Saturday.

Secretary of State spokesman Sailor Jackson said turnout is not expected to top 40 percent statewide, despite races for governor, lieutenant governor and secretary of state.

Early voting closed Saturday with just under 160,000 votes cast statewide. That accounts for about 6 percent of the state's 2.8 million registered voters, according to Jackson.

That means the number of early voters increased about 12 percent over the primary election in 2007, according to Jackson.

Similarly, turnout in Ouachita Parish showed a slight increase as well in early voting for the 2011 primary election compared to the primary election four years ago, according to the Ouachita Parish Registrar of Voters.
