Large crowd attends airport opening

More than 1,000 people turned out on Monday to celebrate the opening of the new $36-million terminal at Monroe Regional Airport.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo called the new airport terminal "a defining moment" for all of northeast Louisiana. He added that the first passengers off the planes will be surprised.
"They're going to think they're in Houston," Mayo said. "They may think they're in Dallas or Atlanta, but they aren't. They're in Monroe, Louisiana."

Mayo credited the work of state and local officials as well as Louisiana's representatives in Washington.

While the mayor said Sens. David Vitter and Mary Landrieu lobbied for the money to build the facility, U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander deserves special recognition.
