Franciscan Sisters mark 100 years

Six women left France with a solitary goal: fulfill God's instruction to minister to the sick and infirm.

The six women left with little, traveling with the clothes they were wearing, a few meager resources and the will to serve a community. They traveled by boat and then by train.
They arrived in Monroe on Sept. 30, 1911.

Next week, the organization they founded will celebrate 100 years of service to the community through the ministry of health care.

The Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady built the first of several hospitals in Monroe, on land where St. Francis Medical Center still stands.
