Candidate lacking in character

Editor:

I support no one in the Clerk of Court's race nor has Darian Long done anything to me personally. However, based on my observations of and experiences with him, it is my opinion he lacks the leadership skills necessary to hold public office and more importantly, the character to do so. Unfortunately, all I have to tell you about him centers around girl's softball because that is his obsession. Fortunately though, actions in the context of a "child's game" speak volumes about a person's character.

At work, you are likely to find Darian talking on the phone, at length, about softball. As a coach, he surrounds himself with "yes men" and separates himself from those with ideas different than his own who threaten his perceived leadership role. With his attitude and methodology, he would likely isolate or lose knowledgeable and experienced members of the Clerk's office who he perceives as a threat to his position. Public servants cannot cut off those injecting new ideas into an organization. It undermines the growth and function of the office, and lessens the overall performance of the office expected by the public.

Darian is selfish, self-serving, and self-righteous. Several years ago, he could not get the Monroe recreational softball league to "do things his way" on certain league and coaching issues, so he pulled girls from his independent all-star team who had been assigned to various teams in the league and went elsewhere to play just as the Monroe league play was commencing. His actions left teams without enough players to compete, caused the league to fold, and in turn, caused the league above it to fold the next year because it lost its feeder league. Children were deprived of the chance to play summer ball because of Darian's selfish actions. It has taken four years of dedicated volunteer work to finally re-establish the two affected leagues. Someone who does what Darian did when 11- and 12-year-old children are involved lacks the character expected of any public servant.

He displays little concern for organizations or their rules. He coached my daughter one season and I was forced to pull her out of an ongoing game because he would not follow rules. As an overall result, he no longer coaches in any rec leagues, and has relegated himself to coaching an independent team not affiliated with anyone. As Clerk, one is called upon to work with the judges, the District Attorney's office, and with various groups during elections to achieve common goals amongst those various offices, and to follow specified procedural rules. Darian's past actions, when called upon to work with others and to follow rules, do not indicate an individual likely to do so.

There are numerous other candidates running for Clerk. Please consider any of them before Darian.
