School Board turns to surplus funds

Ouachita Parish Schools will utilize more than $6 million in cash reserves to offset a budgetary shortfall for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Ouachita Parish School Board unanimously approved a $208 million overall budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The parish school system was faced with an overall deficit of some $6.4 million before tapping surplus monies to balance the budget.

"We're going to have to look for innovative ways to pull away from this," said Superintendent Dr. Bob Webber. "We know we have the money to provide for this year, but we're going to have to make plans for next year."

Webber told the School Board a host of factors contributed to the parish school system having to rely on surplus funds to balance its budget and that not one factor could be singled out.
