Story Archives: Police Jury to consider millage reduction

Police Jury to consider millage reduction
by Michael DeVault - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Property owners could pay a little less for mosquito spraying than they did in 2010, thanks to a reduced millage approved by the Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement Board.

The reduction from 1.99 mills to 1.6 mills will be entertained by the Ouachita Parish Police Jury during its Monday, Sept. 19 meeting.

In 2008, voters approved an increase in the millage rate levied for mosquito abatement to the 1.99-mill rate. The additional monies were needed to fund the development of an Emergency Disease Control Fund.

The fund is a cash reserve that can be used to combat the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses viruses such as encephalitis and West Nile.

"The fund has since been established and the desired balance reached," said Shannon Rider, director of the Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement Board.

Rider said the millage increase in 2008 also helped offset escalating fuel and chemical costs.
