Riders help commemorate 9/11

Every time Jerry Powell and his wife Brenda see an American flag, veteran or active member of the U.S. Armed Forces, they remember their son, Cpl. Chad Powell.

Powell, of West Monroe, died in Iraq in 2005, serving his country in the War on Terror.

On Wednesday, the Powell family was honored for their son's sacrifice, and their loss, by a group of veteran supporters who are on their way to Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

That group, the Code of Support Foundation, began a week-long trek from California on Saturday, stopping in various locations to solemnly hand off a "Code of Support for Our Troops" at each location.
