The Monroe metropolitan region tied with the Baton Rouge area in July for the highest unemployment rate in the state, according to information released by Louisiana Workforce Commission.

Louisiana Workforce Commission recently released the unemployment rates for July for the eight major metropolitan areas in the state and each of the 64 parishes as well.
The unemployment rate for the Monroe metropolitan region was 8.2 percent in July, a decrease from 8.4 percent in June.

The unemployment rate for the state in July was 7.8 percent while the country as a whole posted a July unemployment rate of 9.3 percent.

University of Louisiana-Monroe's associate professor of economics Dr. Robert Eisenstadt said while there's been a decrease in the unemployment rate over the past few months, that doesn't mean there's actually been an improvement in the economy.
