Preliminary estimates of student enrollment at Ouachita Parish Schools show there are roughly 600 more students over last year's numbers.

According to Ouachita Parish Schools personnel director Dr. Don Coker, the first count of student enrollment shows 18,620 students are enrolled in the parish school system for the 2011-2012 school year.

"Those are warm bodies that are here, but we have 19,577 kids scheduled, so there's a difference of about 957 kids," Coker said.

Every Friday, each parish school is required to report its student population to the School Board.
