'School needs to be fun, too'

Sterlington Middle School principal Chris Cox has big plans for this school year, but for the first few days of school, he wants to stand back and watch the students tackle their locker combinations for the first time.

Lockers are just one of the new additions middle school students will see this school year, as part of the Ouachita Parish school system's $1.8-million project to renovate the former A.L. Smith Elementary School.

Now that the new Sterlington Elementary School officially opened its doors this week, middle school students will have the former elementary school all to themselves. It will house roughly 275 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students for the 2011-12 school year.
