Since Monroe Public Works Department took over the demolition of dilapidated structures in 2008, approximately 200 of them have been torn down.

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, the Monroe Public Works Department demolished the 200th dilapidated structure within the city's corporate limits.

Monroe public relations/media coordinator Rod Washington said the Monroe City Council in 2008 instructed its public works department to take over the demolitions in order to save the city money.

"This was basically a cost savings measure when public works moved to take it over because the private contractors' rates were escalating so much it was going to throw it out of budget as far as us trying to meet our yearly goal of getting some houses torn down," Washington said. "Our mayor and council and our administrative department found the necessary capital to purchase the equipment for public works (to tear down dilapidated structures)."
