The city of Monroe recently earned a Louisiana Municipal Association Community Achievement Honorable Mention Award for its community service project called "Operation Neighborhood Restoration."

The announcement of the LMA's 2010 Community Achievement Awards was made Saturday, Aug. 6, at LMA's 74th annual convention at the Shreveport Convention Center.

The convention drew more than 1,500 delegates, spouses, dignitaries, exhibitors and guests.

Monroe's "Operation Neighborhood Restoration" involved the city's efforts to remove community eyesores by demolishing dilapidated structures, putting property adjudicated to the city back on the tax rolls, and partnering with groups like Habitat for Humanity to bring new housing to previous vacant lots to improve neighborhoods.
