Remember the old five and dimes?

They were the perfect place to buy that household item, a piece of candy, or maybe a handkerchief for that special teacher as an end of school year gift. These stores have been long gone and a modern, less nostalgic alternative has emerged: national and regional dollar store chains.

The Ben Franklin Store and the TG and Y are now Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, and Fred's. These stores offer household goods for the cost-conscious customer and are expanding nationwide with the results being seen in northeast Louisiana.
