Lawmakers honored at luncheon

Local legislators breathed a collective sigh of relief Tuesday as they discussed the special session on redistricting and the regular legislative session where they dealt with a $1.6-billion funding shortfall.

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce held its annual legislative appreciation luncheon at the University of Louisiana-Monroe's Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

For some local legislators, it marked the last time they would address the business community as members of the Legislature.

Rep. Kay Katz, R-Monroe, who is term-limited, and Rep. Noble Ellington, R-Winnsboro, who opted not to seek re-election, received standing ovations for their years of public service.
Katz said she had enjoyed her time in the Legislature and commended the northeast Louisiana delegation as one that always worked well together.
