OPPJ approves ordinance to clarify burn ban issue

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office lifted the statewide outdoor burn ban effective today, July 21.

The statewide burn ban was issued last month in response to extreme dry conditions throughout the state and a high wild land fire danger. When the ban to cease burning went into effect, Louisiana was experiencing an average of 300 fires and nearly 4,000 acres lost per month due to dry conditions.

Following the cease and desist order, the fire incidents dropped to 150 fires and 900 acres burned monthly.

Ouachita Parish Fire Department Chief Pat Hemphill said the parish's temporary burn ban will be lifted in conjunction with the state's order.
