Proof in pudding for Coach Brown

The old adage that the proof is in the pudding is a great illustration of the coaching profession. Great coaches have a tendency to win at whichever sport that they coached. Coach Charlie Brown was one of the masters at coaching. He won four state championships in baseball. He won six in football. But winning state championships is not the only measuring tool.

If you attended Charlie Brown's memorial service, it was not the winning accolades that were discussed. It was the man. The man who stood in the gap. He stood in the gap as a substitute father, especially for those who had lost their father through death. I was one of those who he had bridged the gap for. I was only 13 years old when I lost my father to cancer. He was only 44 years old. My mother was only 37 and she was left with four boys to rear; ages 15, 13, 4 and 2.

I can remember the many times that Coach Brown stood in the gap for me. When I broke my collarbone my senior year, he was the link that crossed the chasm of a raging river that my life experiences had become. I had so many plans for my future. I wanted to match or better the career that my daddy had accomplished as a player. An All-Stater in high school and an All-American in college.
