Bridging the gap: City of WM to build crosswalk at Louisville Bridge

The city of West Monroe will be required to use $200,000 in federal stimulus funding to build a crosswalk section at the foot of the Louisville Bridge to appease federal and state agencies.

West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris said Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development along with the Federal Highway Administration wants the city to put the pedestrian crosswalk at the foot of the Louisville Bridge, and in spite of concerns expressed by city officials, the project must move forward.

During Tuesday's regular meeting of the West Monroe Board of Aldermen, the city entered into an agreement with S.E. Huey Consulting Engineers for the design work on the project.
City engineer Robbie George will head the project.

"They are insistent that it be done," Norris said. "Robbie has used all of his persuasive skills to try to convince them that's not a good plan, but they are insistent it needs to be there."
