Sparta reuse project nears completion

West Monroe's Sparta Aquifer reuse project is expected to go online around Thanksgiving, according to West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris.

Work on the Sparta reuse project has been ongoing for a number of years, and efforts picked up in 2008 when the state provided West Monroe with $7 million in capital outlay funding to assist in its development. Another $7 million in capital outlay funding was approved for West Monroe's Sparta reuse project in 2009.

An additional $4.75 million in funding for the project was secured through a grant from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. The city of West Monroe has put up roughly $1.25 million of its own money toward the project.

According to Norris, city officials have taken a number of people to the site to tour the new wastewater facility. The majority of them were in awe of the facility and commented that it would not be possible without the help from the state.
