City begins $7M water meter project

The city of Monroe announced last week it will immediately begin the city-wide installation of $7 million in automated water meters.

The move follows a successful pilot installation project. Roughly 200 automated water meters were installed earlier this summer.

The city-wide project calls for all of Monroe's businesses and residences to be upgraded with a new digital water meter at no additional cost to customers.

According to city officials, the new AMR meters communicate consumption data directly to the utility, making the utility's processes more accurate and more efficient. It also will eliminate the need for utility personnel to visit homes and businesses to gather information about water usage for billing purposes.
