Tuesday's thunderstorms couldn't stop an enthusiastic bunch of West Monroe youth from learning all about police work.

Approximately 35 local youth participated in the West Monroe Police Department's first-ever junior police academy. It was held this week at the former Ransom Elementary School, where the department conducts its training exercises.

West Monroe Police Chief Christopher Elg said the great turnout for the academy definitely means the department plans to host more summer sessions in the future.

"This is a great turnout for the first year, and quite frankly, there wasn't a whole lot of advertising, but classes filled up just by word of mouth," Elg said. "Since it was our first year, we really didn't know what to expect. We hoped to get 20, and we had to make some accommodations because we really didn't want to tell folks no."
