Superintendent leery of state budget cuts

Each year during the regular legislative session, Ouachita Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Bob Webber holds his breath and hopes for the best.

Officials with Ouachita Parish Schools have seen some of the proposed budget cuts state lawmakers are entertaining to help balance the budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, and Webber is hopeful school systems throughout the state can shoulder the burden until the economy picks up and state tax revenues improve.

"Right now we're just seeing some general cuts," Webber said. "We've seen some cuts in the pre-K program and cuts in national board certification funding."

"It's just some things that have hit us hard in the last few years, and it's going to hit us hard again this year," he said. "We were hoping that we wouldn't be cut much this year because school systems are struggling with their budgets, especially school systems that are losing students."
