Calhoun introduces new elevation standards

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury in two weeks will consider an ordinance to establish a standard minimum elevation for structures built in areas prone to flooding.

Police Juror Mack Calhoun introduced the ordinance Monday during the Police Jury's regular meeting. The Police Jury will take a final vote on the issue in two weeks.

If approved by the Police Jury at its June 20 meeting, the ordinance would only affect structures built in locations subject to flooding in the unincorporated areas of the parish.

According to Calhoun's ordinance, the issue of flooding at residences and other structures "is a source of great difficulty and expense to not only the owners and occupants directly affected, but also to the community and government agencies."
