The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office this week reminded parents and guardians that while water activity is popular during summer months, it also poses great dangers.

According to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, the month of May historically signals the beginning of a season of drowning tragedies across the United States.

Roughly 1.2 million people worldwide die each year from drowning, and approximately 50 percent are children, according to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. Children ages 4 and under account for more than 60 percent of these deaths. About one-third of the children who drown each year do so in and around their home.
