Monroe council to fill vacant seats Friday

The Monroe City Council will hold a special meeting Friday, May 20, to appoint two interim City Council members to replace Arthur Gilmore and Robert "Red" Stevens.

Last week, a 12-member jury in U.S. District Court in Monroe returned guilty verdicts on bribery and racketeering charges against Gilmore and Stevens.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 15.

Gilmore and Stevens were indicted last year by a federal grand jury on charges of racketeering and extortion for taking bribes from Monroe businessman Eddie Hakim.
