City anticipates surplus

The city of Monroe expects a slight budget surplus for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, making it the seventh consecutive year the city has posted a surplus.

According to "early indications" from city administration officials, the city is expected to post a budget surplus in the amount of $50,000 to $250,000.

However, budget officer Curtis Heard said the surplus projection was "very conservative" and the actual figure won't be known until the conclusion of a final audit of city finances in the fall.
According to David Barnes, director of administration, the city's anticipated surplus was a result of the city's department heads monitoring their budgets to follow the "12-step plan" implemented at the start of the fiscal year.
