Sales tax collections for Ouachita Parish Schools picked up recently, and school officials hope it's a sign of an improving economy.

School Board business manager Richard Garrett said this time of year school system employees are interested in their 13th pay check, which the School Board distributes in June.
The School Board uses sales tax collections to fund its 13th and 14th checks to all school system employees.

Sales tax collections from the School Board's "Supplemental Salaries Sales Tax" is up so far by $304,795 over the past eight months compared to 2010's sales tax collections over the same eight-month period.
