Lawmakers take wait, see approach to budget

With a $1.6-billion budget shortfall projected in the 2011-2012 fiscal year, legislators in Baton Rouge began weighing their options earlier this week in closing that gap.

The Legislature convened the regular session Monday. The day was highlighted by Gov. Bobby Jindal's speech to a joint session of the House and Senate.

Some lawmakers are questioning the size of the projected deficit.

State Sen. Neil Riser said he was looking forward to "more up to date numbers" from the state Revenue Estimating Conference before lawmakers begin tackling budget cuts.
