Ouachita Correctional Center recently picked up some additional Department of Corrections inmates and that should aid the parish prison financially as it continues to grapple with a projected year-end deficit.

For the past several years, OCC posted a deficit of more than $1 million annually due in large part to the high number of pretrial detainees compared to the number of DOC inmates housed at the prison.

Roughly 60 percent of the inmates at OCC are awaiting trial. The parish alone must bear the cost of providing space and care for pretrial detainees. The state Department of Corrections reimburses the parish for housing DOC inmates at OCC. Ideally, the parish needs to house roughly 400 DOC inmates each day.
