Honeymoon, hospital, football
My wife and I did not get to go too far on our honeymoon. We were married on Sept. 22, and I was playing in a football game on Sept. 23. I was playing for the old Twin City Panthers, the first semi-pro football team in the Monroe and West Monroe area.
Donna, my new bride, sat with my mother and two younger brothers at the game. After one of the plays, Andy, my youngest brother, who was quite young at the time, remarked to Donna that I was still laying on the ground. I had released out of the backfield to become a safety valve receiver. Our quarterback threw the ball a little high and I had to jump for it. I made the catch but the first thing that hit the ground was my back. And the second thing that landed was a 250-pound linebacker, who came to rest on my rib cage. I felt as if someone had shot me with a 30-06 rifle. The pain was horrific.
While all of this was going on, Joe Beck, the next to the youngest, mentioned to my mother that Donna must be cold because she was shaking real bad.
