WM mock trial team competes at regionals This high school mock trial program is designed to introduce young people to the art of advocacy; supplement their knowledge of the workings of our court system; and provide them with the opportunity to develop the skills of teamwork and oral presentation.
In the state competition; teams from schools across the state are matched against one another in a courtroom setting. They prepare a case for both the prosecution and the defense and present their case before a judge and mock jury of performance judges at trial.
This was the West Monroe High School team's first state competition after qualifying by placing second at the regional competition in Shreveport. WMHS was designated a Law Signature School last year by the Louisiana Bar Foundation and pursuant to this designation began teaching Law Studies classes this year through which two mock trial teams were formed for competition. By the end of this year, the school will have a fully functioning courtroom available for competition practices; actual competitions; and hearings to be held by visiting judges and courts. Law Studies teacher and Mock Trial sponsor is Mrs. Mitzi Murray.
Attorney Coaches were Mr. Tom Davenport and Judge Stephens Winters. For the full story, subscribe to the The Ouachita Citizen's NEW E-Edition! |
