Hasley Cemetery historically significant in parish In 1795, Philip Hendrik Nering Bagel, better known as the Baron de Bastrop, received a land grant from King Charles IV of Spain. A portion of this land containing one hundred and fifty-four arpents as purchased in 1827 by Lemuel Newman and his wife, the former Phinetta B. Wooten.
The Newman's established a large plantation with the original home being in the 800 block of the present day Arkansas Road. While continuing to acquire property for their plantation, the Newman's set aside a portion of the west end of their property to be used as a cemetery. The earliest documented burial is that of William Mason who was born the 18th of January, 1765 and died the 14th of November, 1830. Mason left a widow, the former Pamela Ann Mixon and a 2-year-old child, Strother Hilliard Mason.
The cemetery was used as a plantation cemetery as well as by friends and family of the Newman's. It was later used by the towns of Trenton and Cotton Port. .....For the full story, subscribe to the The Ouachita Citizen's NEW E-Edition!
