Turf to pops: Former NFL player to sing with MSO

The first thing you notice is his size, the 6-foot-7, 250-pound frame that dominates the stage and instantly directs all eyes towards him. Maybe he'll tell a story about his 2009 Super Bowl days with the Indianapolis Colts, or talk about his experience with the Cincinnati Bengals on "Hard Knocks." The last thing you'd expect the hulking retired football player to do, though, is sing.

But when Ben Utecht belts out the first note, doubts are destroyed by the angelic voice reverberating out of the former tight end. "When you first meet him you're struck by his size and charm, but when you hear him sing, that's when people's jaws hit the ground," said Steven Reincke, Music Director for the New York Pops.

On Saturday, April 9, at 7 p.m. at the Monroe Civic Center, Northeast Louisiana will experience Ben Utecht's musical talent as he appears with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra at its spring Pops Concert "Proud To Be An American."
