The history of public education in Monroe would be incomplete without an account of the Catholic parochial school, which has formed an integral part of the city system, although operated entirely by the Catholic Church.

The first denominational school began in 1863 under the direction of Mrs. Julia W. Dabbs and Miss Kate Moran, members of St. Matthew Catholic Church led by Father Louis Gergaud. This school established the foundation for the first Catholic school in Monroe.

St. Hyacinth's Academy was opened in February 1866 by Sister Mary Hyacinth, who yielded to the persistent prayers of Father Louis Gergaud, then pastor of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He requested that Sister Hyacinth, a member of the Order of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of St Vincent's Convent in Shreveport, establish a Catholic school center in Monroe.
