The unemployment rate for the Monroe metropolitan area reached 9 percent in January. The Monroe metropolitan area recorded the highest unemployment rate of all eight metropolitan areas in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission recently released the unemployment rates for the month of January for the eight major metropolitan areas and the 64 parishes throughout the state.

"The total nonfarm employment for the Monroe metropolitan area was estimated at 74,600 for January 2011, which was a loss of 1,100 jobs over the month and over the year," according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
