While there's a large number of pretrial detainees housed at Ouachita Correctional Center, local officials say they are doing everything in their power to move those cases through the court system at a faster clip.

Fourth Judicial District Attorney Jerry Jones says the 4th Judicial District Court in Monroe moves pretrial detainees through the system quicker than most court systems throughout the state.

For the past several years, the Ouachita Parish Police Jury has struggled with a more than $1 million deficit each year at OCC due in part to the high number of pretrial detainees housed at the parish prison. OCC closed out the 2010 fiscal year with a $1.5 million deficit. It is projected that OCC will end the 2011 fiscal year with a $1.2 million deficit.
