Former state Sen. Charles D. Jones of Monroe was sentenced Wednesday to 27 months in federal prison for his conviction last year on two counts of filing false income tax returns and one count of tax evasion.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert James sentenced Jones in federal court in Monroe.
Represented by prominent defense attorney Mike Small of Alexandria, Jones has 14 days to appeal the sentence.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Jones will be required to serve no less than 85 percent of the sentence, assuming he earns credit for good behavior.
