What working hard can do
I admire people, men and women alike, who work hard. I have watched two young men over the past thirty years who are unbelievably hard workers. I know they worked hard because I saw them on a daily basis. I was a customer for both of them.
One of them started in business about the same time I did. I was also fortunate to have known him when he was a very young man. He was a student of mind back in the eight grade when I taught and coached in Delhi. He is certainly one of those students who I grew to admire as a man because of his unbelievably high work ethnic. He bought a service station on the corner of Cypress and North Seventh. He put in 18 hour days seven days a week for many years. It was always hard to single out the owner because no one was working harder than he was. He kept most of his employees for the entire time that he owned the station. Mike Register knew how to go the extra mile and even further. Anyone who has done business with Mike knows exactly what I am talking about. Only after Mike began to have a family did he begin to cut back on his hours. First he closed on Sundays.
