Funding for Ouachita River dredging in limbo

For the first time in 40 years, the Ouachita River may not be dredged next year if the Congress goes along with President Obama's proposed budget for the 2011 fiscal year.

That would be the case because Obama's proposed budget for the new fiscal year does not include any funding for dredging the Ouachita.

John Stringer, vice president of the Ouachita River Valley Association, says this could cause a serious issue next year for waterborne shippers on the Ouachita River and Black River.
It also could hamper economic and recreational activity for both Louisiana and Arkansas.
