Since November is Prematurity Awareness Month, the local chapter of the March of Dimes will conduct several events to raise awareness about the issue.

Every year, more than 500,000 babies are born too soon, too small and often very ill, and 10,000 of them are born in Louisiana, according to Sharon Davis with the March of Dimes of North Louisiana.

She said one in four babies born in north Louisiana is premature. This is twice the national average.

Premature birth is the No. 1 cause of newborn death, she said.
