City to use disaster money for drainage work

The city of West Monroe is set to receive some $560,000 for a project to improve drainage along Wellerman Road and the White Columns subdivision.

During the Board of Aldermen's regular meeting Tuesday, aldermen agreed to enter into a subrecipient agreement with the Ouachita Parish Police Jury to spend its share of $3.7 million in disaster recovery money the parish received two years ago from the Louisiana Recovery Authority.

"Some time ago, the state got funding for damage that occurred during Hurricane Gustav," said Mayor Dave Norris. "The money was all sent to the Police Jury, and it was a very complicated process of how you put a project in. Then it was a very complicated project on how we were going to request the money."
