Mayo pledges to do more for homeless

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo says local residents are not doing enough to address the homeless situation in northeast Louisiana, and he has called on people to do more.

Recent surveys by the Homeless Coalition of Northeast Louisiana indicated there are hundreds of people being housed in homeless shelters throughout northeast Louisiana. Of those living in shelters, more than 60 percent are homeless families with children.

According to statistics from the Monroe City School System and Ouachita Parish Schools, there are roughly 626 children in the Monroe city school system, and 739 in the Ouachita Parish school system who are considered homeless.
