The Louisiana Office of Child Services, along with Monroe city officials, held an adoption awareness event this week to kick off events locally for National Adoption Awareness Month.
Each November, the Department of Social Services' Office of Community Services conducts events to show the public the critical need for adoptive families for children, especially teenagers.

The purpose of the event is to encourage more local residents to become foster and adoptive parents to area children who have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.
In the United States, there are more than 500,000 children in the foster care system. In Louisiana, there are more than 4,000.

The number of children in the Monroe region who are currently in foster care is 385.
There are 617 children in the state who are currently available for adoption. In the Monroe region, there are 72 children available for adoption.
