Aldermen revise ordinances

The city of West Monroe will track state law on the crimes of cyber-stalking and cruelty to animals following action taken by the board of aldermen.

Last week during their regular meeting, West Monroe aldermen approved a revised ordinance for animal cruelty and enacted a new ordinance related to the crime of cyber-stalking.

Regarding the cyber-stalking ordinance, West Monroe city attorney Doug Caldwell said, "This is basically adopting state law as a municipal ordinance so we can prosecute in city court."
According to state law, cyber-stalking is the "intentional harassing or threatening of another through the use of electronic mail or electronic communication."
