A jewel called Cheniere: Planned Draw-down will help fish spawn

Ouachita Parish Police Juror Mack Calhoun has known for years that Cheniere Lake was a hidden jewel.

Located in Calhoun's police jury district, he speaks fondly of Cheniere Lake in public meetings and out in the community, and whenever he gets a chance he encourages northeastern Louisiana residents to fish the lake.

Over the past 10 years, roughly 900,000 fish have been placed in Cheniere Lake thanks to the rearing pond the police jury established in 2001.

"The reason we're doing that (stocking the lake) is because of the people we can bring in, and these people who come in will spend their money at our local stores," Calhoun said. "We built bathroom facilities and parking at Cheniere Lake lodge and we have put in over 900,000 Florida Bass."
