Some years back when I was home visiting the church I grew up in, the pastor called his deacons to the front of the church. It was nothing unusual until all of the men had reached the front of the church and he asked each one of them to take off his shoes and socks.

I guess it was at this time that I saw one of the most humbling sights I have ever seen when the pastor took a bowl of water with a washcloth and washed the feet of each of his deacons. Not only did he wash them but he also dried them after he finished washing them.

The washing of feet is nothing new and has been around for generations. In Genesis 18:4 it is mentioned as a courtesy to the guests of Abraham. In Genesis 19:2 it is again mentioned by Lot that the two angels could wash their own feet and they could stay in his house for the night. Again in Genesis 43:24 the steward brought water for the men visiting Joseph's house to wash their feet. In 1 Samuel 25:40-41 the washing of feet was signified as a matrimonial duty.
