Baseball exhibit to open

The Louise Williams Branch Library, located at 140 Bayou Oaks Drive in Swartz, will host a presentation by Robert Tanzy, Sr., on the players of the Monroe Monarchs at 1 p.m. this Monday.

The Monroe Monarchs baseball team played in the Negro Southern League from the late 1920s until the team disbanded in 1935. Some of those years also were spent in the semi-pro Dixie League.

The Monarchs attracted some of the top Negro League talent in history — including pitcher Hilton Smith who got his professional baseball beginnings in Monroe and was enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
